⚠ ANDES VIRUS — ONLY HANTAVIRUS THAT SPREADS BETWEEN PEOPLE
All other hantaviruses require rodent exposure only. Andes virus can spread human-to-human through prolonged close contact with a symptomatic person. This is what makes the MV Hondius outbreak uniquely dangerous.
ANDV — CONFIRMED FACTS
Strain Andes Virus (ANDV)
Disease caused HCPS — Lungs / Cardiac
CFR — this cluster(Case Fatality Rate) 38%on-ship cluster · 3 of 8 cases
Broader contact pool: ~19%
Americas avg CFR 20–50%
Incubation period 1–8 weeksup to 45 days
Rodent reservoir Long-tailed pygmy rice ratSouthern Andes — Chile & Patagonian Argentina
Human-to-human YESprolonged close contact
Antiviral treatment NONE approved for HCPS
Vaccine NONE — globally
Why no antiviral works for ANDV
Ribavirin works partially for HFRS (kidney disease in Europe/Asia) but has not demonstrated effectiveness for HCPS. ANDV causes massive capillary leakage into the lungs — a different mechanism ribavirin does not address. Only ICU-level support can keep the patient alive while their immune system fights the virus.
⚠ NO VACCINE. NO ANTIVIRAL. FOR ANDES VIRUS.
As of May 2026 — confirmed by WHO, CDC, and ECDC — there is no approved vaccine or antiviral for Andes virus or HCPS.

🇰🇷 Hantavax — Not for ANDV
South Korea only. Covers Hantaan strain (kidney disease). Does NOT cover Andes virus. Not WHO-approved. Not internationally available. Irrelevant to this outbreak.
💊 Ribavirin — Ineffective for HCPS
Works partially for HFRS (Asia/Europe strains). Has NOT demonstrated effectiveness for Andes virus / HCPS. Not licensed for HCPS. Source: WHO DON599.
🏥 Only Option: Early ICU
Early ICU admission is the single most important survival factor. Mechanical ventilation, ECMO, fluid management.

MV Hondius had none of this equipment aboard.
WHO / CDC OFFICIAL GUIDANCE
🐀
Avoid rodent contact — No live/dead rodents, droppings, urine, nesting materials, saliva. Primary prevention.
💨
Never dry sweep — Wet-mop first in areas with droppings. Wear N95 mask + gloves.
🏠
Seal your home — Block all rodent entry. Rodent-proof food storage. Remove nesting materials.
🌿
Outdoor precautions — Avoid bare ground in endemic areas. Don't disturb burrows. Ecotourism in Patagonia = elevated risk.
🛳
MV Hondius passengers: Monitor for 45 days from Apr 24. Seek ICU-capable hospital immediately if fever + muscle aches + shortness of breath.
SYMPTOMS — KNOW THESE
🌡
Early (1–8 weeks post-exposure): Fever, severe muscle aches (thighs, hips, back), fatigue, headache, dizziness, nausea.
🫁
EMERGENCY — late stage: Cough, shortness of breath, chest tightness, lungs filling with fluid → cardiogenic shock. Get to ICU immediately.
🤝
ANDV human-to-human: Requires prolonged, sustained, close contact with a symptomatic person. Brief exposure is low but not zero risk.
